What should I have ready before I land at DXB?

The Palm is one of the easier destinations to reach from the airport, but the address is where people slip up. Have these sorted before the seatbelt sign goes off.

  • The full address of where you are staying, including whether it is on the trunk, a frond or the crescent, because the crescent is a different approach
  • Your flight number on the transfer booking, so the pickup time follows the flight if it lands early or late
  • A working phone with roaming or an eSIM, in case you take a different exit from arrivals
  • Your luggage count, which decides between a sedan and an SUV or van
  • A child seat requested at booking if you are travelling with small children
  • Which terminal you land at: Terminal 3 for the home airline, Terminal 1 for most other long-haul carriers, Terminal 2 for regional flights

Which route does the drive from DXB to Palm Jumeirah take?

Your driver leaves the airport onto Airport Road or the Al Garhoud bridge, joins Sheikh Zayed Road heading south-west and stays on it past Downtown, Business Bay and Mall of the Emirates. The exit for the Palm comes just before Dubai Marina, near Al Sufouh, and a short link road drops you onto the trunk. Al Khail Road runs parallel inland and is the usual swap when Sheikh Zayed Road is heavy.

Once on the trunk, addresses split three ways. Trunk apartments and the mall are straight ahead, the sixteen fronds branch off the trunk in pairs, and the crescent resorts are reached through the tunnel at the top of the trunk, which surfaces on the outer ring. Allow another ten minutes for a crescent address, and more if you are at the far tip of either arm.

The Palm is Dubai's best-known man-made island and Visit Dubai's guide to Palm Jumeirah is a good primer on what sits where. The trunk has the shops and most of the apartment towers, the fronds are residential, and the crescent is where nearly all the beach resorts are.

How long does the drive from Dubai airport to the Palm take?

Around 30 to 45 minutes on a clear road, with a late-night or early-morning arrival at the quick end. The slow window is the weekday rush, roughly 7am to 10am and 5pm to 8pm, when Sheikh Zayed Road through Business Bay and past the Marina can push the trip to an hour or more.

Friday and Saturday evenings are the other one to watch, since the Palm's own roads fill with people heading to dinner and the beach clubs. A pre-booked Dubai airport transfer with Emirates Limo is priced at the moment you book, so an extra twenty minutes in traffic costs you time but not money.

Do I pay Salik tolls on the way to the Palm?

You pass through Salik gates on Sheikh Zayed Road, and the Dubai Government explains that the toll is charged automatically by time of day, with a higher rate at peak hours and free crossings in the early hours. The gate reads a tag on the windscreen, so nobody stops and nobody hands over cash.

In a metered taxi the meter keeps running through the gates, and Dubai Airports notes that taxis run 24/7 from ranks at each terminal if you want that option. In an Emirates Limo car the Salik tolls, VAT and all taxes are included in the fixed fare, and nothing is collected in the car.

How does a chauffeur pickup at DXB work for the Palm?

Your chauffeur waits inside the arrivals hall with a name board, takes the luggage and walks you to the car. Emirates Limo tracks the flight, so if you land early or late the pickup moves with you at no charge, and you have 60 minutes of free waiting time counted from the actual landing time.

Choose the car by people and bags. A Lexus ES300 takes four passengers and three bags, a BMW 7-Series or Mercedes-Benz S-Class takes three and three, and a GMC Yukon or Mercedes-Benz V-Class carries six people with six bags. The fleet page lists every option, and if you want the car to stay with you for a first-day tour of the island the hourly chauffeur starts from AED 150 per hour.

What goes wrong on this drive, and how do I avoid it?

Giving a frond or crescent address as "the Palm". The trunk, the fronds and the crescent are three different approaches, and the tunnel only serves the crescent. Write the building name and the frond letter or crescent side into the booking.

Booking a sedan for a family with five suitcases. Three bags is the sedan limit, so pick the Yukon or a van at booking rather than negotiating at the kerb.

Assuming a taxi meter will match a quote. The meter keeps climbing in traffic, so the number at the end is anyone's guess. If you want to know the price before you leave the terminal, book a fixed-price car.

Cancelling late. Cancel 24 hours or more before pickup for a full refund. Inside 24 hours, and for no-shows, the full amount is charged.
