Sheikh Zayed Road, the E11, is the road for almost every Dubai to Abu Dhabi trip. It runs straight down the coast past Dubai Marina, Jebel Ali and the border at Ghantoot, then becomes the main approach into the capital. The UAE Government portal lists the E11 as the country's longest road at roughly 553 km, stretching from the Saudi border to Ras Al Khaimah.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, the E311, is the sensible alternative if you start in Deira, Mirdif, Dubai Silicon Oasis or near Dubai International. It sits inland and joins the E11 well south of Jebel Ali, so it skips the busiest urban section of Sheikh Zayed Road. The same government page puts the E311 at around 220 km in total.

Your chauffeur picks between them on the day based on live traffic, not habit. From Downtown, the Marina or the Palm, the E11 wins nearly every time; from the airport side of the city, the E311 often shaves ten to fifteen minutes.

How long does Dubai to Abu Dhabi take by car?

Which tolls do you pass between Dubai and Abu Dhabi?

What affects the Dubai to Abu Dhabi journey time?

Time of day matters more than anything else. Weekday mornings between 07:00 and 09:00 push commuter traffic out of Dubai and into Abu Dhabi, and the reverse flow builds from 16:00 to 19:00. Where you finish matters just as much. Yas Island and the airport area sit before the bridges, so they are quicker than the Corniche or Al Bateen at the far end of the island, and Saadiyat sits behind its own approach road from the Sheikh Khalifa Bridge side.

Weather is the wildcard. Fog on winter mornings, roughly December to February, brings visibility and speed limits down along the E11 and can add thirty minutes. Heavy rain, which is rare but not unheard of in the same months, does the same.
